6th Annual Alaska Motorcycle Run
June 29 to July 22, 2007
Advanced Bionics is our Premium Sponsor along with Ride-On Tire Sealant, sponsoring us for the 3rd straight year.
July of 2004, 14,000 miles crossing six time zones and three countries was done to raise money for deaf babies. Here's a link to the newspaper story: St. Augustine Record.
July of 2005, two bikers did 9,100 miles to raise funds for assistive living for the deaf and deaf/blind in Gresham, Oregon; the Florida Alliance of Assisitve Services and Technology, and the University of Florida's Cochlear Implant Team. Three TV and one newspaper interviews were given.
June 30, 2006, a charity run to raise funds for the SKI-HI Institute which helps families of infants and young children who are deaf and/or blind raised $5,800 by eight bikers! Bikers who shared rooms had an average cost of just $27 per night, including tax!
June 28, 2007, our 6th Charity Benefit Run is being planned as a scenic route with quite a few sub-500 mile days.
Depending on corporate sponsors, lodging for bikers reaching a specified level as outlined on the Incentives Page may receive partial or full subsidy for lodging. Your tax advisor can show you how mileage and expenses you "donate" to this charity run may be tax deductible.
I drove my '00 Helix 6,800 miles cross country so I know that even 250 cc machines will be successful. Patrick Henry's Suzuki 250 did the 2005 trip with no problems. Look at it this way ... if you have no problems doing 150 or more miles between gas stops, this whole trip is merely a succession of 65 or so gas stops which happens to be one after another, not once every week or so in your everyday routine.
The 2007 trip is being planned as a four corner trip ... including Hyder, Alaska. I've been thru Homer, Anchorage, Fairbanks and I can honestly say that the route to Hyder saves a whole week, and actually is much more scenic (the ice fields in Alberta past Calgary) and safer (route to Hyder is 100% paved). Hyder is surrounded by majestic mountains with waterfalls. There is one of, I believe, only two places where you can actually view grizzly and other bears catching salmon! Stewart BC has charming old hotels. So, the 2007 trip will be to Hyder. Each year, the trip can have different accents ... such as Old Faithful; Natural Bridges; Mokee Dugway; New Mexico, South Dakota Badlands, etc. You can see the proposed route on the photo site.
Another photo site also has Patrick Henry's pictures of the 2005 trip to give you an idea of what the 2007 trip will be like.
Also, there are two glaciers ... Salmon Glacier is a two-hour drive up a mountain road and is simply jaw-dropping spectacular! Here are the photos for that: photo site!
Another factor I am taking in consideration ... some people in our group are simply worn out after three DAYS of driving on Alaska Highway and being stressed out by gravel and actual mud. Going thru Canada via Calgary will also save a lot on gas and lodging and food. Going thru Dawson Creek means a minimum of a week longer in Canada with some gas $5 per gallon and the exchange rate is almost non-existent so there is no money saved.
Bikers and passengers must register. Registration information is found by CLICKING THIS or going to www.DrSign.com.
If you think you can't do this, then you should for that exact reason. My 93-year-old dad still rides his '86 Elite daily (in the 1930s, he had the world's largest 4-cylinder Indian bike). His excellent health and mental attitude is because he said "If you think you can't do something, do it!"
Perhaps some of you will continue riding with me every year as I plan to do this past my 100th birthday. So, if 2007 is out, you can save vacation time for 2008 or later years. However, please don't wait long ... the melting of the glaciers is catastrophic. For instance, a glacier under study at Greenland has tripled its speed. Every year, the same glaciers I see are smaller and smaller. Make plans for 2007!!!
One of our sponsors sent registered riders Ride-On Tire Sealants. I used Ride-On tire sealants in 2004 and 2005 -- they say it should extend tire life .. my front tire had over 31,000 miles when I finally replaced it but it still looked great. Click the front tire link and see for yourself!
