Dave Stufflebeam and I am here in Haines Junction, Yukon.  I drove 620 miles from Wasilla, mostly in light rain but with the rainsuit and boots, I was warm and comfy.  Temperatures stayed in the mid to high 40s ... isn't that great for July?  So far, at 9:15 p.m. the other bikers haven't shown up so I cancelled the two other rooms here at Alcan Motor Inn (I may still have to pay for them unless they are resold) and will cancel all extra rooms (thanks to my precious daughter Katie who is calling the other places for me) en route except one for Dave and myself.  We hope all other bikers are doing well and enjoying their side trips.

Tomorrow morning, Dave and I will be cruising merrily East on the gorgeous Alaska Highway with our destination the Toad River Lodge!  Dave has great photos of a mother bear and her cub but his camera card won't download.

Dave told me another biker in our group (name withheld) had a blowout near Wasilla, AK.  Apparently a few days before, he got a nail in his tire (he didn't have Ride-On Tire Sealant) and by the time the bike was "squirrely", the tire was rather low.  He called a tow truck but another biker in our group (name wittheld again) showed up and put a plug in his tire but he still had to pay the tow truck that showed up $200.  Driving at 50 MPH, he had a blow out due to internal damage to his tire.  By the time he got towed to Honda in Wasilla, they didn't have a tire so Honda of Anchorage sent up a tire.  That, along with another tow truck, set him back almost a thousand dollars.  Thank you Ride-On Tire Sealant from the rest of us who are using it!

By the way Alcan Motor Inn has a restaurant and I had the hot wings AND BOY, THEY WERE GREAT!  Dave enjoyed his salad and especially the cheese cake!  WOO HOO  --- we are having a great time!!!!

Road construction all over the Alaska Highway.

Nice glacier view!

Here are a couple of updates from emails from other bikers below the photo:

Here is the view from our hotel in Haines Junction.  Fresh snow in the mountains!

Hi Mike,
Lou and I have been disconnected for the past couple of days no cell service, phone, internet, etc. but we're in Smithers, British Columbia, Canada resting after a couple rather busy days. Our plan after leaving Dawson City was to head toward White Horse, then down to Highway 37 South to Hyder (to see the Salmon Glacier, and hoped to catch a glimpse of the salmon run).

When we got to White Horse it was still pretty early in the evening so we thought we'd keep on going and try to make Teslin (which is about 1/2 way from White Horse to Watson Lake, the turn off for highway 37.  Well, we got to Teslin and "no room at the Inn" so we continued on toward Watson Lake.   By this time is was about 9pm so every spot we hit was closed for the evening (the VACANCY sign was up, they were just closed).  At about 2am we figured we were going to end up sleeping next to a gas pump for sure.  Then just as we (actually I) was about to run out of gas we saw a VACANCY sign lite up with a light on in the office.

The owners were still up and were more than happy to rent us a room for the night.  It turned out to be the Golden Nugget Lodge, the only 4 star accomodations in that part of Canada.  It was a very nice place and the breakfast the next day was one of the best we've had so far.  So we really lucked out.  The next day we were already at Watson Lake so we headed south on highway 37 heading towards Hyder.  It was a pretty good road with beautiful scenery.   We made it about 400 miles that day and ended up at a great resort that caters to Helicopter skiiers in the winter, the Bell II Lodge.  They had really nice rooms, a Sauna/Jacuzzi workout area and a great restaraunt, and we're pretty sure they discount the rates in the summer because it was actually very reasonable considering what they provided (not much more than the other places we were staying), that one might be worth looking into for your future trips.

After a good night sleep and an early start we made Hyder, Alaska about 12 noon.  The Salmon were not plentiful but they were running and we saw a dozen or so large Chum Salmon swimming upstream.  After that we headed up a rather nasty 21 mile dirt road to the Salmon Glacier, it was spectacular.  It's supposedly 1000 feet thick and runs for over 6 miles.  There we dozens of waterfalls along the road from the snow melt.  All in all a very productive detour off highway 37.  I'd heard you and Dave mention how great Hyder was so I figured we'd give it a try, anybody that has a chance should definitely make that trip.

Lou made it all the way to the Glacier on his Goldwing without any real problems(except he definitely needed a power wash to get all the dirt and mud off).  After we left Hyder we stopped for lunch at the King Edward Hotel in Stewart just across the border from Hyder, AK, the food was pretty good, and the portions were generous.   After lunch we headed for highway 16 on our way to Seattle.  We got about 150 miles down highway 16 (Trans Canada Hwy) and stopped in the town of Smithers, found a hotel with a Jacuzzi and a Sauna and settled in (you can see there is a theme in our choice of accomodations).  Tomorrow we hope to make it halfway to Seattle from here but who knows what the day will bring! Take care Mike, hope everybody else is safe and doing well. Jerry

Another one ... from Dan Whitmore

Mike,I like to keep moving.  My father has been ill and was hospitalized today so it turns out my decision to head home was correct.  Tok to Watson Lake. Watson Lake to Dawson Creek.  Dawson Creek to Montana.  Montana to east of Grand Fork.  Tomorrow...home!Thanks, Dan

Heading Southeast to warmer weather with ENTHUSIASM!
