Steve Schiff from Altamonte Sprins, Florida

Bike:  Harley Davidson Road King 2000

I’m Steve Schiff from Altamonte Springs, FL (just north of Orlando) and earlier this year hit the magic six-o.  I am retired from my first career of 31 years with Radio Shack and I’m not sure what my next career will be so I’m riding while I can.  I found Mike’s site months ago and am really excited to be able to finally sign up. Four daughters and 4 grandkids delayed my final entry but they are excited for me.

This picture is from my ride to the Black Hills in 05 and it’s outside the Crazy Horse Memorial near Custer, SD. ( I’m the one not carved in stone) That was a wonderful ride I took by myself as two friends cancelled and one trailered and met me.  I’ve ridden to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears ride, Milwaukee for Harley’s 100th anniversary, Myrtle Beach Bike weeks and a couple of “rides to the wall” on Memorial day weekend. Oh…I haven’t missed a Daytona Bike week in 11 years because it’s only 42 miles from my house. Fairbanks is just a bit further.

My first bike was a 1969 Honda 750 that I bought from an adult neighbor. He taught be how to ride it so I wouldn’t wreck his bike. One powerful 1st bike!  I’ve had other smaller bikes over the years and then almost a 10 year break (more children) until 1998.  I told my wife I wanted to get a used cruiser and she says “Why don’t you get a Harley?”  Those magic words became our 1997 Dyna Wide Glide that became my wife’s bike when I got my 2000 Road King (she said “get the purple one”, which I love)

Life being what it is I haven’t ridden too much the last two years and being able to do this ride is exceptional. I’ll be in North Carolina when Mike starts out and I hope to meet him in Fort Smith on the evening of the 2nd and stay with the crew until the next to last day. I really want to get to Prudhoe Bay (how many times can one step in Arctic Ocean) so I hope that works out with some others.
